Book publishing by the numbers, 2026

Last updated

Published 2025 and 2026 figures show self-publishing growing fast, indie author median income above traditional author median income, and adult nonfiction sales still down for the year.

This page, compiled by Big Impact Books for CEO Authority Books, collects recent published statistics on author income, market size, and book sales, each with its source. It also includes a calculator that estimates how many copies you would need to sell to reach an income goal, which helps explain why most authority authors measure success beyond royalties.

How many books do you need to sell to make $100,000?

You need $100,000 divided by what you earn per copy: 40,000 copies at $2.50 each, 20,000 at $5, or 10,000 at $10.

That math is why many CEOs treat a book as an authority asset rather than an income stream. A book that leads to one new client, speaking invitation, or media feature can be worth more to a business than thousands of copies in royalties. Try your own figures in the calculator below.

Publishing statistics worth knowing

Each figure is stated as published, with its source.

These are third-party market figures, not Big Impact Books results. Big Impact Books also cites the International Publishers Association figure of more than 2.2 million new titles published in 2019, counting only ISBN-registered books.

What these numbers mean for a CEO's book

Median author incomes in the low five figures show that royalties alone rarely justify a leader's time. The case for a CEO's book is usually authority: credibility with prospects, invitations to speak, and media interest. That is the kind of book Big Impact Books helps business owners and CEOs create, publish, and promote.

How many books do you need to sell to make $100,000?

Divide $100,000 by what you earn per copy. At $2.50 per copy you would need 40,000 copies, at $5 you would need 20,000, and at $10 you would need 10,000. The calculator on our By the Numbers page runs this math for your own figures. Most authority authors measure success by opportunities, not royalties alone.

How much does a beginner author make per book?

Earnings vary widely. Writer Cosmos reports that the Alliance of Independent Authors 2025 survey found indie authors earn a median of $13,500 annually, nearly double the $6,000 to $8,000 median for traditionally published authors. Those are annual medians across all books, not per title, and a first book often earns less than that.

How much does an author make on a $25 book?

It depends on the royalty rate in your contract or platform. As simple examples, a 10 percent royalty on a $25 list price is $2.50 per copy, and a 15 percent royalty is $3.75. Self-published authors keep a larger share but pay their own costs. For CEOs, the book’s larger return is often the opportunities it opens.

Is Amazon KDP still profitable in 2026?

It can be, depending on your sales volume and costs. Writer Cosmos notes that self-published authors can keep up to 70% royalties on ebooks and retain full creative control. Profit still depends on how many copies sell and what you spend on editing, design, and marketing. For most CEOs, profit from copies is not the main goal.

How many books are published every year?

Millions. According to the International Publishers Association, as cited by Big Impact Books, more than 2.2 million new titles were published in 2019. That figure counts only books registered with ISBNs, so the real number including self-published books is likely higher. This is why marketing matters as much as the manuscript itself.

How much does a 200 page book cost to print?

The printing cost of a 200 page book depends on trim size, paper, black and white or color interior, binding, and whether you use print-on-demand or a bulk print run. Bulk runs usually lower the cost per copy. Get a quote from your printer or distribution platform using your exact specifications before setting a list price.
